The first thing I decided to create was the Stargate as it was the most detailed asset in the environment.
I managed to find this template from http://stargate.wikia.com/wiki/Glyph
I blocked out the whole ring first, so that the segment would be the right size and shape when I reduce it to one segment of the gate.
Once I had blocked it out I reduced it to one out of nine segments. This way I was able to build the detail of the chevron and the blades that stick out of it. I was also able to tweak other details on the gate, such as the dividers and the thickness of the gate.
I have kept this file available to use so that i can model the high poly details to create the normal maps.


To unwrap the gate I brought it down to look like the image below. The front side had to be left as a ring because each face fill have a different symbol textured to it. Unwrapping it took quite a while. The reason is that because the chevron had many small faces, it took a while to make sure the correct ones were selected to be grouped together.


I decided that I will create the high poly segments for the normal maps at a later stage. I will also complete the texture for it at a later stage.
